The World From Above: Vienna, Austria

Vienna is a truly majestic city. Everywhere we looked brought orgasm to our eyes—it’s a richly decorated city filled with well-preserved architecture and cultural perfection. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any more glorious, we were presented with the most stunning sights from the city’s most popular viewpoint.

If, like us, you are also after seeing Vienna from above, then head over to the heart of the city—Stephenplatz. There, you will find one of the world’s tallest churches and one of Vienna’s most famous landmarks. Towering at 137 meters high, St. Stephen’s Cathedral or Stephansdom is an imposing gothic structure with an ornately-designed roof and an 800-year old architectural history.

One freezing night in October, we braved the climb up St. Stephen’s tallest tower—the Steffl or the Southern Tower. The construction of the Southern Tower was said to have lasted 65 years—from 1368 to 1433. The tower was instrumental for main observation and command post viewing during the Siege of Vienna in 1529 and the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

We were taken up the tower through an ancient-style elevator that can cramp around 6-8 people. Afterwards, we continued the ascent through the steel stairs, holding on for our dear life. It was windy and we were literally walking above one of the church’s tower tips but the spectacular views that welcomed us from the Watch Room were worth it.

From up the Stephansdom’s Steffl, we could clearly see the elegance of Vienna at night—the crowd at the Stephenplatz, the Baroque-styled St. Peter’s Church and the Wiener Riesenrad—the famous wooden ferries wheel from the movie Before Sunrise—of the Prater Amusement Park.
